Study of normal and abnormal development is one of the most important future research areas in Biology. Developmental Biology has become a synthetic discipline in which genetics, molecular biology, physiology and anatomy are integrated to improve our understanding of disease. An integrated systems biology approach is required to improve our understanding of congenital diseases, infertility, cancer, developmental and metabolic disorders and to develop innovative therapeutic strategies. Of particular interest is the use of stem and progenitor cells in regenerative medicine. Modern approaches of Developmental Biology has also provided interesting and surprising explanations about plant and animal evolution. Therefore, student formation in Developmental Biology faces a new challenge: becoming multidisciplinary to allow future researchers to answer the exciting questions opened by this domain of Biology.

The international Master programme in Developmental Biology is developped by leading Institutes in four European countries (France, Spain, Netherlands and Portugal). The programme offers essential in-depth teaching of fundamental principles in Developmental Biology, in which a synthesis of genetic, molecular and cellular approaches is at the focal point of training. Complementary training includes:

  • Developmental Biology (Sorbonne Université, Paris): genetic, molecular and cellular aproaches to developmental biology.
  • Evolution and Development (University of Lisbon, UL, Lisbon): comparative integration of developmental genetics and population genetics, interaction of developing cells, organisms and populations with their environment.
  • Development in Medicine (University of Maastricht, UM, Maastricht): integration of genetics and epigenetics in congenital and acquired conditions and diseases (abnormal development, physiology and oncology).
  • Systems Biology and Development (University of Pompeu Fabra, UPF, Barcelona): integrated data analysis and modeling to build, validate and elucidate complex biological systems in developmental biology.

The programme’s objective is to attract motivated students to a fully integrated Master course that combines the best elements of existing courses by the consortium members. Graduates will emerge with critical understanding of basic and applied scientific knowledge and excellent professional and personal skills. The specializations allow students to obtain original multiple high qualifications in complementary disciplines and generate career opportunities in academic research, pharmaceutical industry, biomedical research with an emphasis on systems biology and applied clinical sciences, as well as in policy making and advisory organization environmental and conservation areas.

Admission Criteria for the students to attend the International Master: the presequite for the admission in the master is to possess a Bachelor degree (licence) in Biological Sciences with a basic background in Developmental Biology. For the Systems Biology option, a basic background in Bioinformatics is required. Students must also possess a certification of proficiency in English (e.g, TOEFL, minimum score 550 or equivalent).

Structure of the programme: The teaching will be done in English. Students must acquire 120 ECTS at the end of the master. Students should validate the minimum of 30 ECTS in Developmental Biology at the UPMC and 30 ECTS in the chosen speciality (Systems Biology, Biology of Evolution or Clinical Sciences) with at least one semester of mobility in the partner University.
